Sarita Rani and Avinash bags title of Best Athlete 2017
5th Annual Athletic Meet 2017 concludes at Chandigarh University
Savita Rani a BA 1st year student and Avinash Shekhawat, Chemical Engineering student won the Best Athlete 2017 title during the 5th Annual Athletic Meet at Chandigarh University. The 2-day Annual Athletic Meet 2017, ended to a colorful closing ceremony at University Campus sports complex with the winners awarded with medals by Dr. R.S.Bawa, Vice Chancellor, Chandigarh University. Sarita Rani won 5 Gold & 1 Silver Medal, while Avinash Shekhawat won 5 Gold medals to bag Best Athlete Award in the track events.
Avinash won 5 Gold Medals in 5000 meters, 3000 meters, 1500 meters, 400 meters & 800 meters event, while Sarita Rani bagged 5 Gold Medals in 400 meters, 200 meters, 100 meters, High Jump, Long Jump and silver in Discus Throw Girls category.
Team Mechanical Engineering won both 4×100 m (Boys) and 4×400 (Boys) relay race category. Ravi Jaglan B.Com won Gold in Discus Throw (Boys) while Rashmi BA student won Gold in the Girls category of the Discus Throw event. In a tight finish, Vijay Kumar Singh claimed Gold medal in Shortput (Boys) while Pooja Rani won Gold in Girls event. Dinesh Kumar, Chemical Engineering won Long Jump in the Boys category event while Sarita Rani won in the Girls category. Javelin Throw which was introduced for the 1st time in the University Athletic Meet was won by Vijay Kumar and Parbinder Gill in the Boys & Girls category respectively.
While awarding medals to the winners, Dr. R.S.Bawa, Vice-Chancellor said that “Sports plays an important role for the all-round development during student life and hence Chandigarh University is giving special focus on sports as we have developed a world class in-house sports complex at the campus”. With the current strength of students studying under Sports Category at Chandigarh University, touching 200, the University is providing every effort in the form of 100% scholarship, free hostel and diet facility along with professional training from experienced coaches to develop & train the new generation sports-persons who can represent India at International & National level, Dr. Bawa added.
