Chandigarh University announces Dhyan Chand Sports Scholarship worth 2 crores for the Sports Achievers
Punjab Government has announced a hike in prize money being given to sports achievers and medal winners from the state. This was announced by Sports and Youth Welfare Minister, Punjab Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi during a state-level felicitation ceremony to honor the sports-persons of Punjab organized at Chandigarh University, Gharuan. While announcing the award policy, the minister said, “Punjab Government will now offer a sum of 2.5 crores along with government job to gold medal winners in Olympics while the silver medal winner would get 2 crores and bronze medal winners will get 1.5 crores”. Further Rana Gurmit Sodhi announced that the government will now give 1 crore award money to gold medal winner in Asian or Commonwealth games while the silver medal & bronze medal winners will get 75 lakhs and 50 lakhs respectively.
The sports minister also announced that the Punjab Government has ordered every department to keep 3% of jobs reserved for sports achievers and medal winners. Punjab Government along with Chandigarh University today gave Pride of India Awards to prominent players, Arjun Awardees, Dronacharya Awardees from Punjab in a state-level function held at the university campus. The felicitation ceremony was organized to mark the 114th birth anniversary of Hockey Legend Major Dhayan Chand which is also celebrated as National Sports Day in India.
Those awarded included Hockey Player & Arjun Awardee Charanjeet Singh, Arjun Awardee & Wrestler Tara Singh, Dronacharya Awardee and Boxer Gurbaksh Singh, Athlete & Dronacharya Awardee Sukhdev Singh and Nirpjeet Singh an Arjun Awardee in Volleyball. In addition, the government also honored 180 University players who have won International/ National medals in various sports competitions representing India and Punjab respectively. The sports minister also launched Major Dhyan Chand Sports Scholarships worth Rs. 2 Crores which will be given by Chandigarh University to more than 200 players studying in the university.
While congratulating the sports achievers of Chandigarh University, Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chancellor, CU said, “The University is doing all efforts to felicitate the next generation of sports-persons who could be the future medal winners for the country”. The University has kept 200 seats reserved for the sports achievers and more than 2 crores of scholarship would be provided under Dhyan Chand Scholarship Scheme in which 100% academic fee waiver, hostel fee waiver, diet charges and free of cost coaching would be offered to the students.
