CU Boxer Shashi Chopra bags Best Women Boxer Award during All India Inter-University Women Boxing Championship
Shashi Chopra of Chandigarh University Gharuan has been awarded as the Best Boxer (Women) in the All India Inter-University Boxing (Women) Championship 2016-17. Team Chandigarh University has bagged 3rd position (2nd Runner-up) by winning 2 Gold and One Bronze Medal during the All India Inter-university Women Boxing Championship which was organized at Phagwara, Punjab. Teams from more than 75 Universities participated in the various weight categories of the Championship.
Shashi Chopra (CU) won Gold Medal by beating Bindu from Bhagat Phool Singh Women University, Haryana in the finals of the 57kg category of the Championship. During the earlier stage of the championship, Shashi Chopra beat boxer from Kurukshetra University in the Quarter-final match, while she beat boxer from Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University in the semi-final match. Yet another player from Chandigarh University, Mamta (CU) won Gold Medal in the 75kg weight category of the Championship. Mamta won her quarter-final match against the boxer from HP University, Shimla, while she beat player from Sardar Patel University in the semi-final. In a closely fought finals, Mamta beat Neelam, boxer from Kurukshetra University.
Another player from Chandigarh University Ritu won Bronze Medal in the 64 kg category of the All India Inter-University Women Boxing Championship. Ritu beat boxer from Punjab University, Chandigarh in the quarterfinals but she lost her match in the semifinals. With 25 championship points, team Chandigarh University was placed at 3rd position in the All India Inter-University Women Boxing Championship and scored 1st rank among the Universities from Punjab. Team from Kurukshetra University scored 1st position with 52 points while team MDU Rohtak bagged the 2nd overall position.
