Team Chandigarh University has bagged silver medal during the All-India Inter-University American Football Championship held at Punjabi University, Patiala. More than 24 teams from Universities all-across India participated during the tournament which were divided into 4 pools comprising of 6 teams in each pool. Chandigarh University topped their respective pool, Pool-D and remained un-beaten to enter finals in their maiden attempt itself.
Playing in their league matches, team from Chandigarh University beat Lovely Professional University, Punjab (27-7) in their 1st match, followed by match with Jain University, Bangalore which was also won (19-0) comfortably to enter quarter-finals of tournament. Lead by Gurvant Singh, Captain, Team CU continued their dominance during quarter-finals and beat Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (9-0) to enter the semi-finals where they met team from Maharishi University, Rohtak. It was a clean sweep for team Chandigarh University which managed to beat MDU, Rohtak (33-0) to enter the finals of the All-India Inter-University American Football Championship. Last year defending champion and host team from Punjabi University, Patiala had already booked their berth in the finals of the tournament.
While briefing about his experience of the tournament, Gurvant Singh said “There was close fight with the Punjabi University team in the finals where we lost to defending champion 20-15”. Team Chandigarh University managed to dominate the first half of the match but Punjabi University pulled-off very well during the second half and won the gold medal to retain their championship in the tournament, added team captain, Gurvant. The award ceremony was presided over by Mr. Prem Singh Chandumajra, Member Parliament, Anandpur Sahib.
