North Zone Inter University Chess Tournament at Chandigarh University

In men MDU Rohtak wins North Zone Inter University Chess Tournament: University of Delhi wins in the Women Category


Team of MDU Rohtak lifted the overall trophy of AIU North Zone Inter University Chess Tournament in the men’s category which concluded at Chandigarh University Gharuan while team from University of Delhi came second in the tournament. After finishing of round 7, teams of MDU Rohtak, University of Delhi, PEC University Chandigarh and CCS Merrut which lead the final scoreboard have qualified from North Zone for the All India Inter-University Chess Championship which will be played later during the year. In the women’s Category University of Delhi lifted the North Zone Inter University Chess Tournament while Punjab University came close second.  The other teams who have qualified for the All India Chess Tournament in the women’s category are Punjabi University Patiala and Lucknow University. More than 61 university teams from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh, J&K, UP, Uttrakhand took part in the North Zone Inter University Chess Tournament.

In the final (7th) round of the men’s category, the match between MDU Rohtak and CCS Merrut ended in a draw (2-2) while PEC University Chandigarh won their match against IKGPTU Kapurthala (4-0). The other tough match was played between University of Delhi and Punjab University Chandigarh which was also a draw (2-2). Central University Jammu beat Chitkara University Rajpura (2.5-1.5) while the host team of Chandigarh University beat University of Jammu (2.5-1.5). MJP Rohilkhand University beat CBL University Bhiwani (3-1).

The final (6th) round in the women’s category of the tournament saw tough fight between teams of Punjabi University Patiala and Punjab University Chandigarh which finally ended in a draw (2-2) while University of Delhi comfortably beat MDU Rohtak (4-0). Thapar University beat Chitkara University (4-0) while Lucknow University beat IKGPTU Kapurthala (3-1). CCS Merrut beat University of Allahbad (3.5-0.5) while HP Shimla University beat Gharwal University (3-1).

Abhiraj Sinha of Lucknow University won the best player on Board 1 while Bharat Kaura from GADVASU Ludhiana won best player for Board 2. Jai Saxena from University of Allahbad won best player on Board 3 while Punit Indora of MDU Rohtak won best player of Board 4. In the women’s category Suyeta Saha of LPU won best player on Board 1 while ISHA Saini from GJU Hissar won best player on Board 2.
