Chandigarh University honours 7 women personalities with Women Icon of the Year Award

“It is high time that we check the actual implementation and protection of women rights at ground level , further it is to be seen that benefits of women rights are reaching every section of the society or not” said social worker, writer and TDex speaker Supreet Diman. She was speaking during the National Level debate on Women Empowerment key to socio-economic development of the country organised by Chandigarh University to mark the celebration of International Women’s Day. Eminent women personalities from the field of literature, sports, social work, film industry, entrepreneur and media participated in the National level debate which was attended by students and faculty of the University.


Chandigarh University honours the eminent women achievers in different fields with Women Icon of the Year 2021 award for being a role model in their respective field. The recipient of Women Icon of the Year 2021 award included Kaana Singh, eminent writer, Gauri Sheoran, World Shooting Champion of India , Meenakshi Vashishth, Editor of leading Hindi daily, Pankhuri Gidwani, Miss Grand International, Lalita Choudhary, Fashion designer and social worker, Megha, Radio Jockey and Supreet Dhiman, Entrepreneur and Social Activist. While participating in the debate Supreet Dhiman said, “According to a recent Women’s Empowerment Report, only 42.2 percent women are getting salary packages equal to those of men and most of them are working in the government sector”. She further added that although the government has curated various welfare schemes for women but the benefits of such schemes reaches to only a smaller portion of the women population. Speaking on the occasion eminent social worker Lalita Choudhary said, “Universities and Colleges have an important role to play in educating women about their rights so that they are able to come forward without any hesitation,  there are many section of society which are still stopping women to step out of their homes and become economically independent”.

While highlighting the important role of women in development of a nation, Women Writer Kaana Singh said, “There are ample number of success stories of Indian Women Entrepreneur such as Gujarat women working for Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation and women working in different parts of India for Khadi Gram Udhyog''. The real idea of building an empowered society is through empowerment of women``.

“All the religions practiced in India have advocated for equal rights and opportunities for both men and women but it could not be practically implemented in our society” said Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chancellor, Chandigarh University. The Chancellor assured that Chandigarh University will continue to work for the empowerment of women by providing equal opportunities for them in higher education, research and entrepreneurship.
