Chandigarh University in association with IEEE organizes National Seminar on "Women in Engineering"
"In India there is 40% gap in enrollment rate of girls and boys in Engineering" says Bharti Basit, IEEMA State Head
Department of Electrical Engineering at Chandigarh University in association with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) have organized a National Seminar on "Women in Engineering". Women delegates from Academia, Industry, Media, Research Scholars and Entrepreneurs joined in as panelists to discuss the global and national scenario on number of women taking engineering as their careers. Indian Electrical Electronics Manufacturing Association (IEEMA) State head, Bharti Basit, Punjab Institute of Technology Mohali Director, Dr. Prabhjot Kaur, Future Hi-Tech Batteries Director, Savneet Kaur and NIT Hamirpur Professor, Dr. Y.R.Sood were the dignitaries present on the occasion.
While addressing the female engineering students of the university Bharti Basit said, "Indian girls are reluctant to join STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses and their enrollment rate is very less in comparison to the developed countries like USA, Japan, China". Although the situation has improved during the last decade yet according to a recent All India Survey on Higher Education conducted by MHRD, Government of India shows that there is a gap of more than 40% between number of boys joining Engineering and number of girls, she added.
Dr. Prabhjot highlighted the schemes being run by Government to improve the enrollment rate of girls in Engineering and said, "The government has reserved certain number of seats in premier engineering institutions like IITs, NITs for girls to improve the situation and there are number of scholarship schemes like single girl child being offered to encourage the female students in engineering".
