Nainital, India – A group of astronomy enthusiasts from Chandigarh University recently visited the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, gaining firsthand exposure to advanced scientific research and astronomical observation. The visit, organized as part of an academic initiative, provided students with an opportunity to explore cutting-edge facilities, engage with experts, and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Nainital.
Day 1: Scientific Insights and ObservationsThe journey commenced with a visit to the ARIES Stratosphere & Troposphere Radar (ASTRAD) facility, where Mr. Arjuna Reddy, Senior Engineering Associate, conducted an informative session on radar systems, atmospheric research, and climate studies. Students gained insights into the technological aspects of meteorological analysis and the significance of such research in understanding climate patterns.
Later in the day, students participated in a solar observation session led by Mr. Virendra Yadav, Scientist & Communication Executive at ARIES. Using specialized solar-filtered telescopes, they observed the Sun’s corona and learned about the materials used in solar filters, along with essential safety measures for solar viewing. The day concluded with an interactive session at the 104 cm Sampurnanand Telescope, one of India's leading optical observatories. Devanand Ullas, a PhD scholar at ARIES, explained the telescope’s working principles and how astronomical data is collected, analyzed, and applied in scientific research.
Day 2: Exploring the Cultural and Natural Beauty of Nainital
Beyond academic learning, students explored the picturesque surroundings of Nainital, visiting cultural landmarks, serene landscapes, and local eateries. This day provided a refreshing balance of adventure and relaxation, allowing participants to experience the rich heritage and natural charm of the region.
Day 3: A Night Under the StarsThe highlight of the trip was a stargazing session at ARIES, led by Mr. Mahadev. Under the clear night sky, students observed celestial bodies and engaged in discussions on astronomy, cosmology, and astrophysics with Mr. Shubham Yadav, PhD scholar at ARIES. This session deepened their understanding of stellar evolution and the vastness of the cosmos.
Acknowledgments and Takeaways
The visit was made possible through the support of Dr. Dharmahinder Singh Chand, HoD, Aerospace Engineering at Chandigarh University, along with faculty mentors Mr. Rahul Gupta and Mrs. Vishali Thakur, whose guidance enriched the overall experience.
This educational trip not only strengthened the students' passion for astronomy but also highlighted Chandigarh University’s commitment to experiential learning through real-world exposure.
