Rugby Team of Chandigarh University claims silver at Khelo India University Games

Team Chandigarh University Gharuan won 5 medals in various games during 1st Khelo India University Games (KIUG) at Odisha. The first of its kind Khelo India University Level Games was jointly organized by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India and Association of Indian Universities which more than 3400 athletes from 159 universities took part. In the team’s event, Chandigarh University won silver medal in the Men’s Rugby Championship. Playing in their league matches, team Chandigarh University showcased exemplary teamwork and won all the matches comfortably. In the first match team CU beat LPU Jalandhar with a score of 14-0, while Chandigarh University boys beat the University of Jammu comprehensively with a score of 53-0. Chandigarh University team overpowered the host team of KIIT Bhubaneshwar in the final league match with a score of 19-14 to enter the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.



In the quarter-final match team CU beat Punjabi University Patiala with a score of 32-0 while the team once again beat team LPU Jalandhar 19-0 to reach the finals of the tournament. The victory journey of team Chandigarh University was halted in the finals where the boys went down fighting team of Shivaji University Maharashtra with a final score of 19-24 and claimed the silver medal in the tournament. Sushma won Gold Medal in the 81 kg Women’s Boxing Championship beating the player from MGSU Bikaner with a bout score of 5-0. Earlier during the tournament, Sushma beat players from University of Kerala and Kurukshetra to consolidate her position in the finals. Yet another player Amrit won silver medal in the 69 kg Women’s Boxing Championship where she beat boxers from Punjabi University Patiala and CCSU Meerut in the league matches before going down in the finals against boxer from Mewad University.

 In the men’s category, Harwinder Singh grabbed silver medal in the 49 kg Boxing Championship by beating the boxers from SGBAU Maharashtra and GNDU Amritsar in the league matches and finally going down (2-3) in the final match against boxer from Punjabi University Patiala. Another boxer Ajay won bronze medal in the 52 kg men’s category during the Khelo India Games.
