Chandigarh: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning for Punjab as temperatures are set to soar between May 16 and 18. This marks the first heatwave alert for the entire state this summer season.
According to IMD forecasts, Punjab is unlikely to see any relief from the scorching heat in the next five days. In light of these predictions, IMD has issued a Yellow alert for May 16 and 17, with an Orange alert for May 18, indicating potential disruptions to transport facilities. Intensive heatwave conditions are anticipated in isolated areas, particularly in the southern parts of Punjab on May 18.
Faridkot recorded the highest temperature in the state on Tuesday, reaching 42.1°C, exceeding the normal temperature by over 2°C.
Director of IMD, Chandigarh, AK Singh emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "Heatwave conditions will prevail over Punjab between May 16 and 18. During this period, the maximum temperature is likely to cross 45° or 46°C. On May 18, we have already forecast severe heatwave conditions in the southwest region of Punjab."
